Defeat of ISIS Begins But with a Heavy Price in Iraqi Lives!
Right now, as the news media reports progress in the military effort against Daesh (ISIS) in Ramadi and elsewhere, we are receiving first-hand reports of the horrible atrocities they are committing, even as they retreat. Using women and children as human shields; burning women for "witchcraft"; killing men for suspicion of being homosexual; and many mass executions in Hawija, South of Mosul and elsewhere. It will take many years and resources for the survivors in these areas to recover and rebuild their lives.
In response to this devastation, we in OWFI are rapidly expanding our outreach and sheltering capacity. We are currently opening new safe and respectful facilities to shelter victimized women in Iraq's southern and western regions. We are also continuing to work diligently against bureaucratic red tape to open a shelter in the north for Yazidi women who have escaped sexual slavery under Daesh.
In addition, we are using our unique position as a grassroots organization with activists and allies across Western Iraq to carefully collect and document reports of the abuses committed by Daesh. These reports will be shared with national and international bodies to ensure that these atrocities are not forgotten, that one day justice will be served against the terrorists and compensation made to the victims.
Through all the war and darkness of the last years, OWFI has continued to help victimized women and fight for women's human rights to be honored in Iraq. We have greatly expanded our sheltering in 2015, while simultaneously keeping up the political work - protests, meetings, building alliances - that is required to make lasting change for women possible.
